Butler's approach to appliqu resembles the multimedia collage technique that artists such as Romare Bearden used to create works with dimension and layers of meaning, incorporating fabric, paper, and other media. It was 1995, her final year at Howard University, and the fine art major, pregnant with her first daughter, found herself. She also often uses shiny or velvety fabrics to portray Black womens hair. Bisa Butler was a high school art teacher for 10 years in the Newark Public Schools and 3 years at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. This was an important detail to her, as it communicated something of a community caring for each other and taking pride in each other. About a year after her debut exhibition, Butlers first work went on a secondary market auction and sold for $75,000, which is more than seven times higher than what the estimated selling price was. I remember running into friends at the fair who asked breathlessly, Did you see those quilts? When Erica Warren, the textile curator at the Art Institute of Chicago, first saw the work at Expo, she was transfixed and astonished. When the works came into my view in the crowded exhibition hall, she told me by email, there were a few particulars that really grabbed my attention, including the vibrant colors and patterns, the discerning gazes of the portraits subjects, and the balance and dynamism of the figural arrangements.
