And so how did you swivel from that experience into something in the film world?Sheldon Lettich: This will sound like it's coming completely out of left field, but the first time I actually got paid to write a script was a horror film that involved voodoo.Blake Harris: Yeah, I think that qualifies as "left field" status.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] What happened was I had met [Blaxploitation star] Leon Isaac Kennedy, who wanted to option a script of mine. And I said, "Okay, Sheldon, you get the credits, and then when you get up to the next level, you just bring me up." Armed with a gun that fires Kryptonite needles, Bloodsport nearly succeeded in his mission to eliminate the Man of Steel, but ultimately failed. Are you kidding me? Is that true?Sheldon Lettich: We were working on a sequel, but I just don't think it's going to go anywhere, unfortunately. So Grant's dad, he basically saw that I was struggling to make money so our family could eat and I could buy myself shoes. He tells one where he says he met Menahem Golan [a producer on Bloodsport] at a restaurant and [Van Damme] threw out his legs and blah blah blah. In 1980, Frank Dux first came into the public eye via an article in the November issue of Black Belt magazine. Well, about the only thing they showed was a trophy receipt.Blake Harris: Which they claimed was evidence that the trophy you won was "at least partially made in the San Fernando Valley? So you have to get everyone on the same page and agree to make this movie. He was good at boxing. And, at that lunch, Mark agreed and hired me to write the script for Bloodsport.Blake Harris: Frank mentioned he already had a script? While trying to gain access into. You've gotta kidnap his friend. I remember paying for the uniforms. "The fact that Frank hasn't been involved with any movie since 1994 says something doesn't it? And he's in this movie called No Retreat, No Surrender. Jean-Claude had a three picture deal with Menahem at Cannon and Leon was very impressed with Jean-Claude; we all thought this was a match made in heaven. And just a few more questions. They were flabbergasted. But to my pleasant surprise, Lettich was a complete gentleman. And then he did a kick that missed his face by like two inches. I was a gentleman. I didn't see it coming. Menahem still thought it was a piece of s***.Blake Harris: How come?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I think this might answer your question. Also, Idris Elba's voice is just something else. Find ratings and reviews for the newest movie and TV shows. What follows is the rest of our conversation Blake Harris: Given that you were mentioned several times in my interview with Frank, I can't help but start off by asking how surprised and/or frustrated you were to see the things he said?Sheldon Lettich: Frustrated? And on it he writes: To the Man Who Beat Me. That's bullshit, that's total bullshit.Blake Harris: What about those claims regarding your covert military background? A franchise was the idea. And so he says yeah, sure, give it a shot. And in that way it works, I can see that. With any film that's based on a true story, there are always questions and curiosities about authenticity. The government did not know how much he knew about other covert operations, he said, so they placed information in his file to destroy his credibility. He took pride in the fact that he was all natural. But they still run it. What was he like?Frank Dux: He was wonderful. How much of the story really happened? That it would be helpful and therapeutic.Blake Harris: And was it? "Tagline:The True Story of an American Ninja. Rambo was always a reluctant badass.Sheldon Lettich: Yeah, you've really gotta push him to fight. That this guy looks just like me and we should suggest it to Mark DiSalle. What is he, a walking dictionary of a secret society? And I said, "If you're gonna go, just don't pull me with you." After the fight, I go down to him and I said, "Hey, Mr. Moore, do you remember me?" So I have all these memories of falling down stairs and crawling on my knees. What follows is a conversation with Frank Dux, who was the real-life inspiration behind the movie Bloodsport. So he met me on the roof of the Victoria hotel. I wasn't an actor, but I was a writer, so I got in touch with John and we hit it off. There had been a few other plays dealing with the military and Vietnam at the time, but they weren't written by those who had actually been there. But what's interesting is that after the fight, I see Norris signing a program for Moore. Synopsis:U.S. Army Captain Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), who had been trained as a boy by the legendary Ninjutsu master Senzo Tanaka, decides to honor his mentor by taking the place of Tanaka's dead son in an illegal, no-holds-barred martial arts tournament called the "Kumite. Very well known. Bloodsport was produced by Cannon Films and released by Warner Bros. on 26 February 1988. And of course he says he did (but he didn't). And that's why I kept it kind of fictional. Jean-Claude Van Damme." And the receipt was dated 1982, okay? "There is not Mr. Tanaka in Japanese history" of the Ninja families, Tanemura said. In exchange for dropping the suit, they offered me the rights to The Corsican Brothers, which I readily agreed to because, by then, Jean-Claude was trying to get a project set up with Moshe Diamant. Uh, no. Because you didn't do it in Hong Kong." Three months later, it formally opened at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles to rave reviews. "Blake Harris: So what eventually changed Menahem's mind? People would just assume that this is how it worked on those other two movies.Blake Harris: That makes sense.Sheldon Lettich: So I actually suggested to Jean-Claude that he use Frank Dux to write the script. 20th Century Fox was high on Only the Strong and we all kind of expected that movie to do better than it did. So we pitched him Legionnaire, gave him the treatment and Ed went for it.Blake Harris: You mentioned that Columbia passed on Legionnaire because it didn't "stick with the Van Damme formula." I met Gladys, the woman of my dreams, I had a baby, and I'm miserable. The character is initially depicted as a vengeful veteran of the Vietnam War, angry at the people of Metropolis for their "senseless . I never accused the military of doing it. They were supposed to present the supposed evidence that said things didn't exist. You see my point? Or, better yet, where does that phrase come from?Frank Dux: Oh, that's easy. In fact, I was born with my foot so pigeon-toed that it actually went backwards; my foot, it could go 180 degrees the other way. I think what happened in reality was more interesting, but you have a limited amount of time to tell a story and it has to resonate with the audience, you know? And then he said, "What the hell are we doing out here?" No. Jean-Claude, Michel Qissi and we were all predicting how much money the movie was going to make.Blake Harris: That's wonderful.Sheldon Lettich: Yes, but there was still an additional hurdle. I was there at every meeting and, of course, they were getting all the ideas out of me. They could shut me out from sequel rights. Was Sheldon the first person you shared it with?Frank Dux: Well, it was supposed to be a series. But he had a great imagination, he had good ideas and he knew the martial arts world pretty well. And then Moore took me and Grant and started showing us some stuff. The piece, entitled "Kumite: A Learning Experience," was written by editor John Stewart and begins with the following note: From time to time, Black Belt learns of unusual events or occurrences in the martial arts; events thateither because of their nature or because they occurred in the distant pastcannot be easily verified. And so, you know, it was just a nice fit. After directing Jean-Claude in Double Impact [1991] and Lionheart [1990] before that, was there any reason you didn't want to be involved with writing or directing?Sheldon Lettich: That was right after another movie I did called Only the Strong [1993] and I seemed to have a lot of other things going on. The Origins of Gladiatorial Games. That kind of caught my fancy. That's water off my back. We gave our enthusiastic thumbs up and the next thing I know they're in pre-production and off to Hong Kong. He would punch the bricks, breaking them apart. And Stallone felt the same way. If he had to be the bad guy and killed by the protagonist. Like in South America it was called "Vale Tudo" and if the Japanese were running the event it was "Kumite San Soo," so this was a word that described them all.Blake Harris: That's interesting. That is not to say that the Tanaka name has no meaning. Do you see what I'm saying? So I climbed up on the ledge with him. He's also said it under oath by the way and identified me. I was at this taping and I even got to ask a question, so this is probably my favorite episode by default. In fact, we explored Post Traumatic Stress in the play, but the term PTSD had not even been coined yet. And if somebody tells me they were in Vietnam, and in the Marine Corps, I'll believe them. I don't remember in detail what our first interaction was like, but we just kind of hit it off.Blake Harris: Was it weird for you at all, as a Vietnam veteran, to be working on a book about the war that was written by someone who hadn't been there?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I didn't know that at the time. So I suggested a version where Rambo tells Trautman, "Sorry, Colonel, I fought my war. And I had to find a way for him to kind of come back in and get his mind out of it. It was also seen by Viacom. It was done on the exact same day that Masaaki Hatsumi, Stephen Hayes and Shoto Tanemurathese are guys who think no one in the world is a ninja but them and everyone else is a fake.Blake Harris: What about some of the specific claims that the piece makes? You're craaaaaaazy." You know, Jean-Claude was totally overwhelmed when he got to work with Stallone on Expendables 2. And he was an idol of Jean-Claude's too.Blake Harris: Yeah? So it should be a total of six blows, except this turned out to be a total of eight because of those two to Vic's head. Well, here's the reality of the situation. Viking Samurai 104K subscribers Subscribe 546 16K views 1 year ago How did the Bloodsport Redux trailer go viral and Why this movie needs to get made! I really screwed up. Shortly after running our last piece, How Did This Get Made: A Conversation with Frank Dux, the Real-Life Inspiration for Bloodsport, I was put in touch with Sheldon Lettich. The concept of gladiatorial games has its roots in the Etruscans, the predecessors of the Romans. In this declaration, Commander Martin attests to the following: Frank Dux: As far as my military service goes, I should also mention that I'm named as a source contributor in the US Navy SEAL SPECWAR manual. When he saw he had to walk [across] an I-beam to me, and I threw a jumping spin heel kick on the ledge of the building there, he goes: Holy shit." That was the real Sheldon Lettich. But it was interesting because he's fighting Mike Stone and Mike Stone had reportedly 91 wins. I met this guy Sheldon Lettich, who had done a play called Tracers and we became friends. So Leon and I go and pitch this to Menahem. And I just want to end it right now." So cool, in fact, that now we have a professional basketball team called The Raptors and no one raised an eyebrow about why a team from Tornoto, Canada would be named that. On Bloodsport, we got into it during one of the fight scenes. The ninja school if you want to call it that. It was ridiculous what they had. I showed him some video footage, and that's how the project started.Blake Harris: Before talking about next steps, I'm curious to hear more about your initial script. So he pitched me the story for Kickboxer and I said, "Well, if you're looking for a martial arts film, I've got one of my own that I think you might likeBloodsport." What made you such an extraordinary fighter?Frank Dux: Well, you know what? I turned over the programs from the fights that we had in those days. Nobody clapped for Sheldon. He didn't like it. JCVD RE-EDITED THE MOVIE HIMSELF TO GET IT . Enjoy, and please share and subscribe! This was all very, very low budget. None of it.Blake Harris: InterestingFrank Dux: And Shoto Tanemura, he says he's never heard of a Dukes or a Tanaka? It worked great. So he brought Tracers to the Steppenwolf Theatre and he directed it. In this video, I speak with the Dan. He owes you two more movies! Bloodsport is a 1988 American martial arts film directed by Newt Arnold, and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Donald Gibb, Leah Ayres, and Bolo Yeung. These guys, after brutally going at each other, now they were just laughing it off. It's a tale so amazing that two months after the film's release, it was dismissed by the L.A. Times as nothing but a fabricated "macho fantasy." It's not something that I'm interested in, but good luck." Menahem had also seen the little 16mm movie [Firefight] I directed and was going to give me my first directing deal.Blake Harris: For you to direct a Lone Wolf McQuade sequel starring Leon Isaac Kennedy and Chuck Norris?Sheldon Lettich: Yes, except that Chuck didn't want to do it. And the story there, which I've told many times, came from Frank telling me about his exploits. And here comes Moore, and Moore drops him in under 30 seconds. Back when I first started working with Stallone, my agent had told me to bring an idea to pitch him for a script. The Corsican Brothers. Ian Fleming based his characters on real people. Well I did, and I landed one right on his nose.Blake Harris: Really?Frank Dux: Yeah, and he was not happy about that. "Blake Harris: [laughter]Sheldon Lettich: I tried to make my case. I assume you're referring to Jean-Claude. Let's put Jean-Claude in. And we did. In front of everybody. There's not a Tanaka in Japanese history of the ninja families? And I had read an article, in this magazine called M, about the French Foreign Legion. By Earwolf, Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas. "He's a loser. I remember him saying, "Michael Dudikoff is a movie star! Did that piece directly lead to Bloodsport? And that relationship led to other things down the road, as you know, but meanwhile my script Firebase was going around. How involved were you with that reshaping?Frank Dux: Every day, when Sheldon was writing the script, I would be in the office with him and Mark DiSalle, the producer. And I said, "To be the best you've gotta fight the best. And they weren't returning phone calls. We had a nice conversation and promised each other to meet up when he was back in LA. Okay, okay, you made your point. He saw the script. She'd never seen it. Blake Harris: That story in the L.A. Times was pretty brutal. I thought: Oh shit, I'm going to get my ass handed to me. Are you guys still friendly?Sheldon Lettich: Oh yeah. He didn't know what to think. So my agent sent him Firebase and he responded very enthusiastically. with Andy Griffith, where Barney Fife was getting picked on and so he goes to learn judo. We're 60 stories in the air, I'm not kidding you. I told Jean-Claude I might be getting the rights back to Corsican Brothers so he got Moshe on board. Not go into the past. Why don't you go check it out?" So he started taking me to construction sites where I could get work. KUMITE! KUMITE! That movie's terrible; I'm putting it straight to video. And I think it's because he felt very insecure. "But Sly," I said, "it really wouldn't work that way because one thing that's been established with Rambo is that he's the baddest motherf***er in the world, but he doesn't want to fight. This thing, it had legs, and started traveling around the world (London, Australia, etc. Menahem started to realize what he had with Jean-Claudeand remember, he had two more movies with himso he called us into his office and said, "We need to find our next movie for Jean-Claude." He was considered "unstoppable" at that time. He was a little too old at the time. So we had a number of people come to my apartment; John would test them out for their acting abilities and we would also try to determine if they were for real.Blake Harris: In what sense?Sheldon Lettich: Oh, I just meant we'd try to determine if they were really Vietnam veterans. I think Jean-Claude and I have done just fine without 'riding his coattails,' haven't we?". "Blake Harris: That's great. We'd shoot one side of the screen with one of the brothers and then Jean-Claude would have to change his hair, make-up, wardrobe and we'd have a double standing in for another brother. And he did that to Sheldon several times. Blake Harris: What was the scripting process like for Rambo III, working with Stallone?Sheldon Lettich: He and I were pretty much on the same wavelength for that. How did that come about?Sheldon Lettich: Well, it's interesting. Sheldon wrote Legionnaire and was supposed to direct it, but then Jean-Claude got someone else. Later on, Lee took Grant and showed him that one of his legs was shorter than the other. But the point I was leading up to was that Jean-Claude just wouldn't be the villain who gets killed at the end of a movie. It took me years to understand the producer's point, but I do now. Then we needed someone different to play the Chuck Norris role. So these kids kind of grew up together. "Tagline:The True Story of an American Ninja, "All I request," Lettich started off by saying, "is that we try to keep discussion about Frank Dux to a minimum. It was very time-consuming and it was not easy to match things up with the optical printer, but I thought we did a pretty good job of that. And not only did More beat Lee, but he actually let him score one. Okay? You gotta admire the fact that he wanted to get a real Vietnam vet working on the script with him. During that time, he's never felt like he had a platform to defuse those lies and tell his side of the storyuntil now. 5 years ago. It was offered to him and Seagal. Qissi followed Van Damme to Los Angeles and found himself in a bit part in Bloodsport and eventually played the villain, Tong Po, in Kickboxer. Bloodsport wasn't an Oscar-worthy film in any manner (the original cut was deemed unwatchable and a re-edit was completed before release), but Van Damme's stoic charisma and the memorable. You had mentioned that you and Sheldon reshaped that original script. During the tournament, Dux battles an array of international fighters from various schools of martial arts. He wants to find a more peaceful path. You wanted to help him be successful. I thought it was Pasadena, but everyone's told me it was Long Beach. And that was the difference. He was the one who actually introduced me to beef and oyster sauce. And Menahem was dead set against it.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: [Laughing at the memory] His word for Jean-Claude was "poison." And then Gary Sinese saw the play in New York and he wanted to put it on in Chicago. That's what they always show on the history channel, those two to the head. This is the kind of bond we had. He knew enough buzzwords to make me think he's the real deal, he's probably been over there. They'll cover Frank Dux being a real man, Van Damme's soft baby buns, blindfolded tea training, the not so secret illegal Kumite martial-arts tournament, Ray Jackson, and much more. And then one day I get invited down to the Long Beach Invitationals. As a result, he's spent the past 28 years dealing with perpetual allegations of being a fake and a fraud. 4. Sheldon Lettich: Yeah. They liked the idea, liked the script, and decided to go ahead and do it as a low-budget movie. And then the fight was on. An animatronic dinosaur with a teen's brain, dinosaur charades, a weird striptease for a brain in a bowl, and much more. Which was Mike's move.
